About Us

The Outback Air Race is a great adventure for us, and a perfect focus for fundraising efforts for RFDS.
Our team name is a nod to Hilda Hope McMaugh, the first Australian woman to obtain a pilot's licence. On November 15th, 1919, in London after her service as a nurse during the First World War, Hilda completed a month of training to qualify as a pilot and receive her Pilot Certificate.
She was not able to convert her licence to an Australian one so did not get to fly over our great continent. Hilda represents for us, the courage and tenacity it takes to learn to fly. She inspires us as a ground breaker and shows that the link between aviation and health roles has a long legacy.
